I have received a leaflet on istonic tablets you drink in a glass of water each day, to rehydrate your whole body, without peeing it out. I am thinking of buying them for my son who has bad reflux and heartburn (which has already damaged his windpipe and given him ulcers in his stomach). I am worried because he won't drink water, so I thought he might benifit from these tablets, but I don;t know if they are safe. Could you also tell me if he is okay to drink a couple of glasses of bear he has cut down drinking wine, and is spicey foods bad for him. I would really be grateful for your advice, thank you Mrs Gilmartin.

Hello, I would not recommend the isotonic tablets as what he needs is something for the reflux itself such as a H-2 blocker (Pepcid, Zantac, etc), but possibly even a PPI - proton pump inhibitor such as Nexium. He also should have an endoscopy if this has been going on for awhile, and he should also be ruled out for H. pylori (an infection that can be cured with antibioitics and other medications, plus the endoscopy could help diagnosis anything worse than just a bad case of reflux. I hope this helps, take care.
Doctor Douglas only answered half of my question, what about the diet part of my question
Hello, Oh, I'm sorry - missed that - Alcohol in general - wine, beer, liquor - all of it exacerbates the problem of GERD - so this is not recommended - so cut back entirely, of a lot. As far as food - eating a bland diet with minimal spices will help - or eating a diet that is tolerated. Also, eating/drinking dairy products once a day will help too. Also, PROTEIN - not enough can be said about eating protein - dairy has plenty of protein, but getting more with meat (non-fatty meat such as fish and chicken) will help tremendously. As far a fluid, yes water, but even other fluids will help. Take care.
