I am attracted to a man who had shingles and is taking a drug to prevent a breakout. Presently, he does not have a breakout. He told me that it comes and goes when he is under stressed. I have an immune system problem called mixed connective tissue disorder, and I am concerned about whether having a sexual relationship with him would caused me to get the virus. I had chicken pox when I was a child and I had it again when I was an adult at age 40ish when my children had them. would having sexual relationship with this man endanger my health?

Greetings.
Is the condition shingles or herpes?
Dr. Arun
shingles. aren't shingles also herpes?
shingles.
Hello,
A recurrence of shingles is not common and usually after an attack the anti-viral medications are needed for only small duration. The transmission of the virus occurs when there is an outbreak. With cessation of the symptoms usually transmission is not a possibility. The virus stays in our body after a chicken pox attack and this can reactivate anytime in lifetime. So though you had chicken pox twice, the virus will stay in the body and can cause shingles, theoretically. But this may never happen also. Since your partner does not have outbreak presently, this will not be transmitted. Shingles and herpes are different. Please read about shingles in this resource;

if my partner has an outbreak in the scalp or at his back, will i get the virus if we touch or have sexual contact? if so, how can i prevent it? Thank you.
During the outbreak, the virus are shed and with an immunological disorder, there is a chance of virus transmission. Even covering the lesion cannot eliminate the risk completely. So sex or intimate skin contact during the outbreak should be avoided.
