Are you in a profession where you have to do a lot of hard work with your hands? How long have you had this?
No, I don't do anything that would be abrasive to my skin. I have a desk job and don't ever have sore feet from walking -- I don't walk that far. On my left hand's knuckles, I've had those dark patches for nearly 10 years now. Appeared in undergrad, around 19yrs or 20yrs old.
You should consult a Dermatologist for this. There are some disease conditions which can cause hyperpigmentation, such hyperpigmentation starts on the knuckles and can gradually lead to thickening of the skin. The main disease conditions which can cause hyperpigmentation are Hyperthyroidism, Diabetes skin disease, Addison's disease, and Hemochromatosis. You can read up here: http://www.aafp.org/afp/20031115/1955.htmlBesides this, two other conditions which have slightly different symptoms are Dermatomyositis and Cutaneous Porphyrias. You should consult a dermatologist to rule them out.I hope my answer has helped you.
