How can you really tell the difference between gas and appendicitis?
Gender: FemaleAge: 43 Already Tried: I was recently diagnosed with a kidney infection and put on Cipro. I keep having bad gas which is causing pain in my lower right side. This morning it seems to still be gas, but in the center and not really pain, but rumbling. I have no fever, but I am so scared of appendicitis. My sister's ruptured and she almost died because they didn't figure it out in time. I am able to pass gas and go to the bathroom. My stool was green for about 2 days. I heard and read online that symptoms of a kidney infection can mimic appendicitis and so now I'm a little worried that the antibiotics would slow the progression of an appendix attack and I won't know until it's too late. Am I just paranoid? Please advise. The more detailed the better and I will add bonus for that. Thanks!
Hello The classic symptoms of appendicitis include: Dull pain near the navel or the upper abdomen that becomes sharp as it moves to the lower right abdomen. This is usually the first sign. The pain is at first diffuse and poorly localized, that is, not confined to one spot. This pain becomes sharper over several hours.Pain worsens if you cough, walk or make other jarring movements Fever of 99° F to 102° F,nausea, vomiting. Whereas the pain due to gastric trouble is mostly in the epigastric region that is area above navel. Pain is dull & continous & there is relation with food. No fever. No pain on coughing. No sharp/severe pain. You need colonoscopy, endoscopy, gastroscopy or EGD,stool examination & culture,x-rays of abdomen may be required. The exact diagnosis can only be made after physical examination & tests. So I advice you to make an appointment with your doctor Regards Dr.Charles. Are there instances when it takes a longer time for the symptoms to become worse and/or could it be affected by antibiotics? Can gas get trapped in your lower right side "resembling" appendicitis? Sorry.. I need more info so as to know whether or not to call the doc. It has been 2 days and there is some pain not near my navel, but in the navel itself. (but I have been bloated and have pierced navel)
Yes,it is called chronic appendictis.Chronic appendicitis is very rare and not only that, it is slower in its progress and has less intense, even significant signs and symptoms. Appendicitis pain cannot remain near navel for two days. It remais near navel only for few hours then shifts to the lower right abdomen with classical symptoms. Your symptoms are suggestive of gastric trouble & not of appendicitis. Take antacid- Gaviscon. It contains alginic acid and sodium bicarbonate. The combination of the alginic acid and bicarbonate will create a a foam barrier which floats on the stomach acid, providing great relief. Take tab.Ranitidine(Zantac) 150 mg twice a day. Both these are available without a prescription.Avoid smoking & alcohol consumption.Dont take fried, spicy, salty, chilly food items.Avoid those things that irritate your stomach or cause your symptoms to flare up.
