My son has had diarrhea for over a week now. He has a little discomfort in his stomach though, for the most part, he feels fine. He has been on a diet of saltines and 7UP. At this point should we be trying something different to help resolve his diarrhea? Would Amodium AD be a possible solution? Thank you for your help. TS

Greetings.
How may motions is he passing a day?
Is the frequency of motion gradually decreasing?
Are they foul smelling?
Dr. Arun
He has had three or four motions a day for the past six days. The motions have waivered a bit downward, but do not show signs of stopping. Most are foul smelling.
Hello,
A foul smell denote some bacterial infection. Even bacterial intestinal infections do resolve on their own, in around five days. Immodium should be avoided as it decreases the intestinal motility. So the toxins stay in the body for more time. The diarrhea is suppose to be protective phenomenon which eliminates the toxins produced by the bacteria in intestines. The decreased motility by the immodium will affect this protective phenomenon.
The necessity of the antibiotics would be determined by the severity of his symptoms. If you feel that his stomach pain is less than 3-4 on the scale of 0-10, and motions are decreasing in the amount and frequency, day by day and he is taking fluids in adequate amount and he is not feeling any weakness or any alarming symptom, you may further watch a day or two. Otherwise contact his physician for a prescription of an antibiotic.
