I was diagnosed two weeks ago with a low b12 level of 231. My GP started me on 1000 mcg of B12 cyanocobalamine. I then went to a endocrinologist for a thyroid condition that turned out to be okay but he recommended that I bump up my b12 to 2000 mcg. I then within the last week switched my b12 to methylcobalamine sublingual. When I went to my GP yesterday, at the advice of the endo, she gave me a shot of B12 and told me to take 1000 mcg methylcobalamine sublingual daily. Last night I was unable to sleep and today I am more nauseated than usual. Is this a result of the B12 shot? How long will this last and when can I expect to start feeling better as far as B12 levels? I am really miserable with chest pains (cardiac problems have been ruled out), some anxiety, loss of appetite to the point of having to force myself to eat, and just a general feeling of being unwell.
Gender: FemaleAge: 35State/Country: California Already Tried: I have been seen by a cardiologist to rule out heart problems. I have been seen by an endocrinologist due to hypothyroidism and he thinks that everything is fine. I am also seeing a therapist regarding anxiety that has developed since I have been having these problems.
Did the doctor mention the term pernicious anemia or give you a reason for the Vitamin B shot besides your level was 231? What other medical conditions do you have and what other medications and vitamins do you take?
She did mention it, but didn't order any other tests to see what was going on. I think that they were thinking it had to do with my hypothyroidism. This all started with an anxiety attack over chest pain that I was having six weeks ago and has progressed ever since. I have also had diarrhea or very loose yellow stools for the last six weeks also. Currently I am on .137 levoxyl, 40 mg lovastatin and 25 mg Atenolol for the fast heart rate that also developed six weeks ago. Other than the B12 that is all I have been taking.
Diarrhea can be side effect of the Vitamin B12 oral and injectable. Do you have anxiety attacks often? I notived you didn't have any meds listed that would specifically treat anxiety.
I started having them in May when I started having chest pain. I do take .50 mg of Klonopin as needed. I don't take it often, so I forgot about it. I haven't had a full blown anxiety attack in 5.5 weeks and had only had maybe two before that. I have noticed that some of the nervous feeling has been gone since I started the B12 though. It is more the physical things that are bothering me now.

By physical symptoms are you referring to the difficulty sleeping, nausea, loss of appetite and feeling of unwell?

Those are some of them. There is the chest pain, muscles weakness, hair falling out, heat intolerance, fast heart rate, exhaustion without being able to sleep a full night, difficulty concentrating, diarrhea, and feeling of carpal tunnel syndrome along with other muscle aches.
From looking at your symptoms and telling me that the endo said all was normal, your symptoms could be depression. It would make sense with the anxious feeling, chest pain, exhaustion, trouble concentrating, trouble sleeping, aches and pains all over.If it is occurring before your period, it could be premenstrual syndrome or PMDD. If you go to www.webmd.com and type depression in the search line, it will give you the option to click on depression overview. Click on that link and there are some links that you can click on which will allow you to check your symptoms against the symptoms of depression to see if that may be the issue right now for you. Many people have depression at some point in their life and the good news is that is controllable with medicines &/or counseling help. Believe it or not, depression does make your body physically ill. You could be having some perimenopausal symptoms with the heat intolerance and hair falling out. Go to www.webmd.com and check out the information. I will be available on this site if you need to talk or what more information. I personally take medicine for depression and anxiety ( have for over 18 years) so I know what if feels like. I am here to help you. Thank you for allowing me to help you. You don't think that the B12 has anything to do with it at all? Do you feel that I would have had some improvement with the amount of B12 that I have had already?
Depending on how your body is absorbing the Vitamin B12 could determine how much it is going to help you. It sounds like you have only been taking it for a short period of time. The vitamin B12 should help you feel better. If you think it could be something else like fibromyaglia with the muscle pains, some doctors prescribe antidepressants as well to help with those symptoms. There is also information about fibromyalgia there is information on www.webmd.com if you want to check that out as well. Let me know if you need anything else.
