My mom (who is 55 years old) had a papsmear and was suggested to get a Biopsy done. Below are the notes from the doctor, could you please explain what this means. Is it dangerous? My mother is in India and I am in USA and I cannot talk to the doctor directly, hence I am requesting you to help me understand the problem. "Impression : Atrophic smears with foci suggestive of hygrade squamous intreapithelial lesion. Mild Anisonucleosis. Background shows Neutrothils. Adequate smears show begin squamous cells with few clusters of phroma polygonal cells that exhibit nuclear hpercia." My Mother got the Biopsy done today and she is asked to come back in a week for results. I am worried about the results and hence want to know if it is really bad. I really appreciate your immediate response in this matter.
Gender: FemaleAge: 33State/Country: Texas Already Tried: Just had a Biopsy. Waiting for the results.
Hello, Atrohic doesn't mean anything, but HGSIL (High grade) does. Basically the next step IS a biopsy of the cervix, or a LEEP (I would suggest a LEEP or a cone biopsy) over a 'Freezing' which is what is usually done in India, I think. If you mother has been faithful with her PAP smears, she should be okay. This is most likely Pre-cancer - and the LEEP or cone biopsy will be curative unless she just wants a hysterectomy to be done with it. Take care.
Dr. Douglas,
Thank you for your response. I still have a couple of questions.
As I said her Biopsy results will come on netx Tuesday and we are all very tensed about the results. Here are a couple of questions I have.
1. Does this papsmear result mean she will get cancer very soon or in the near future.
2. If the Dr suggests a surgery (LEEP or something else) and we go ahead and get it done, are there still chances of getting cancer, if so what % chances or is it completely treated.
3. Does her age (55 yrs) have any affect on this kind of a thing. I mean is there a chance that 25 yr olds have less chances of getting cancer and 55 yr old has more chances or something like that.
4. I keep reading that procedure like LEEP will fix it. Can we rest assured that my Mom will be safe or is there still risk after the surgery too.
5. Lastly what kind of surgery is LEEP, is it major or minor.
Thanks again for your help in this matter.
Hello, Your MOM should get a LEEP since she is menopausal and she is done having children - if the margins of the LEEP are clear, this should be curative. The age does NOT matter. A LEEP is a 30 second office procedure done with local anesthesia (lidocaine in the cervix, and is painless with the lidocaine). I hope this helps and please click on ACCEPT as this would be appreciated for my time. Thank you.

Thanks Again. I already accepted the payment. But just as a final wrap up.
How much % of life threatening is this. Sorry about the questions but I am very worried about this issue. Also please let me know if I should be this worried or I am going beyond.
Hello, If the LEEP has clear margins, she will have no problem with cancer - just need to follow up in 6 months. If JUST CIN II to III - then about a 2 to 4 % chance of cervical cancer - but this is quite curable too. I would not be too concerned with just a HGSIL PAP - I see these all the time and I do LEEPs all the time. Take care. And, thank you!
Thanks Again. I feel much relieved now. I will wait for the Biopsy result and will get back to you if I need help. Thanks so much for your time and answers.
