Customer Question

HI, I am taking chemo for ovarian cancer, and experienced horrible bone pain. Vicodene didnt even touch the pain. I have some decatron, would that help if I have the same pain next chemo round? They give me decatron 5 mg, 5 pills the night before chemo and the day of, just wondering if I took a couple of these to ease the pain that I experienced. I dont want to go thru that again, thanks.

Decadron is a glucocorticoid drug which means it decreases inflammation. It is from the steroid family of drugs. I included this information from www.webmd.com for you. There is more information on this web site.

Decadron Oral Uses
Dexamethasone is used to treat conditions such as arthritis, blood/hormone/immune system disorders, allergic reactions, certain skin and eye conditions, breathing problems, certain bowel disorders, and certain cancers. It is also used as a test for an adrenal gland disorder (Cushing's syndrome).

This medication is a corticosteroid hormone (glucocorticoid). It decreases your body's natural defensive response and reduces symptoms such as swelling and allergic-type reactions.

OTHER USES: This section contains uses of this drug that are not listed in the approved professional labeling for the drug but that may be prescribed by your health care professional. Use this drug for a condition that is listed in this section only if it has been so prescribed by your health care professional.

This drug may also be used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy.

Since the dose you took last time helped the bone pain, you should ask your doctor to prescribe that dose again before your next chemo treatment. I don't know if the lesser dose you are wanting to take would have the same effect on your bone pain. There may be something else that will have a greater effect at preventing and relieving the bone pain.

I hope this information is helpful in answering your question. Thank you for allowing me to help. I will keep you in my prayers.

sorry I didnt explain properly, no the drug was not given to me for bone pain and didnt lessen my pain. I was given this drug the night before my chemo and the day of, the bone pain started the third day. It was terrible, and nothing they gave me helped. I was on vicoden and darvocet and tylenol and motrin. I was asking if I took the decrotron would it help relieve my bone pain. Thanks

Thank you for the claification.

Decadron is used to treat arthritis inflammation and pain. From the drugs you mentioned, the vicoden is the strongest. I would suggest talking to your doctor about a pain patch or something stronger than the vicoden. There may be something else they can give you specifically for the pain. The Decadron was most likely given to you so you would not have nausea and vomiting from the chemo.
