Floaters just appeared in my right eye for the first time. I am 64 years old. i have not been doing anything unusual or strenuous. Websites say to ignore floaters unless you also see flashing lights, which could signal a detached retina OR if there is a significant increase in the number of floaters you see. Since I've never had floaters before, could this be a sign of a detached retina. Should I go to the hospital to have my eye checked.

Hello, Greetings, Floaters can sometimes occur normally . When it appears, there can be blurring of vision, but it should go away soon. This is more common in elderly. In majority cases it is harmless. But a sudden occurence needs a check up by ophthalmologist to be safe. Hope this information will help you. Wish your healthy life. Any query, please ask. Regards.
When you say "a sudden occurence needs a check up by ophthalmologist to be safe," it is Friday night at 11pm. I see three possible choices. Go immediately to the emergency room of a hospital, wait until Saturday morning then go to the hospital, or wait until Monday and see an opthalmologist privately. How urgently do I need to get this seen, or should I see if it gets better or worse before taking action.
Usually floaters are not associated detachment. But if you see any shadow like thing in any part of the visual field, you should take action urgently & go to ER.
