Hello;

Thank you for writing in today.

In your particular situation, I think I can offer some helpful suggestions.

First of all, try discussing this with your medical provider. Let him or her evaluate your tongue. In fact, there are a few possible structural and size problems that could be contributing to this problem. Also, sometimes medications, such as steroid use, can cause an enlarged tongue, which contributes to biting the tongue.

Next, if you have an evaluation with your provider, you may want to discuss possible referral to a speech pathologist. A speech pathologist is able evaluate your current mastication (chewing) and swallow. The pathologist may also be helpful in identifying why you are having such difficulty. He/she may be able to identify a problem and recommend changing your chewing technique. It may be as simple as doing some chewing exercises to get yourself into a new habit.

I hope this helps. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please let me know.

Ms. Lisa
