Customer Question

I have been prescibed Simvastatin 10mg as my cholestrol was 7.7 then 7.1. I am 73 and weigh 59kg's. I am fit and well with no BP ,diabetes or heart problems. My diet is healthy with little fat content. I have been taking natural things such as cinnamon and honey and was dissapointed when it didn't lower the cholestrol over a period of 6monthes. I am reluctant to go on the Simvastatin as it seems like having to stay on it forever yet a bit concerned that I will be at risk. What are your thoughts on this, please.

Hi,

Thank you for submitting your question.

I understand that you have tried to lower your cholesterol by eating healthy and taking natural supplements. However, you should know that in addition to dietary intake, genetics can play an important role in affecting your cholesterol levels. In other words, I believe you may have a genetic predisposition to developing high cholesterol levels. This explains why you are unable to lower your cholesterol by diet and supplements alone.

Your cholesterol level is quite high. Although you are healthy and have no other medical issues, I would still recommend that you take lipid-lowering medication such as simvastatin. It takes about 10 years for cholesterol plaques to block a blood vessel. Because you are healthy and most likely have many more years to live, it is very important to lower your cholesterol level to prevent stroke/heart disease.

I have many patients on simvastatin. Side effects are not common. Your doctor will monitor your liver function regularly. If you develop any muscle pain, be sure to tell your doctor(possible sign of a rare side effect).

I hope this answers your question.
