I started having a build up of a white coating on my tongue

Customer Question

I started having a build up of a white coating on my tongue about three years ago. It causes a bad taste in my mouth and it gets worse when I eat things with lots of sugar in them or when I workout (run, lift or do anything to get my heart rate up). I will sometimes cough up small white particles of stuff that always smell the same way. This has also caused severe dry mouth and i can't drink enough water throughout the day.   This is usually when I workout. I have had all my blood work done and everything came back good. I have went to several doctors and no answer. It feels like its some type of bacteria my body can't fight off and may be something in my stomach area. It all started after having oral sex with my girlfriend. I naturally thought it was an std but we both got checked and it came by negative. It has also caused me to get hot very easy and sweat more when I barely do anything.

Already Tried:
I have been giving a anti fungal mouth wash for yeast infection. This did not work although when it first stated three years ago there was almost a bubbling feeling on my tongue it was so bad, and it has not been like that sense althought it is still pretty bad. I use a tongue scrape every morning from the build up on my tongue. I have also had sinus problems since I got this. The ENT doctor gave me sinus med but no of them worked at all. Its always stayed the same.

Did they test you for thrush or yeast?

Customer replied 1029 days and 2 hours ago.

They did and that's what they said ithey thought it was at first but it didn't go away. That was three years ago. They said that I was healthy and my immune system should have fought it off. They only saw that in older people

I agree, we usually only see it in people with a compromised immune system...however, not always.

Is it uncomfortable? (besides the dry mouth?)

If it was tested and not thrush I would relate the bad taste and doscoloration to dry mouth. The question is...what is causing the dry mouth?

Are you taking any medications....OTC or anything?

Customer replied 1029 days and 2 hours ago.

The thing is, it is affected by what I eat. Its always there but lets say that I drink gatorade or a coke before I work out. It causes it to get really bad and feels like its coming from my stomach to my mouth. Like a bacteria infection in my stomache or something. Is that possible? No medications besides sleeping meds. Since this happened its affected my sleep, my body gets hot all the time, and there is really no discomfort in my mouth besides on the fact that it causes such a bad odor. Its so frustrating because I have ran into a brick wall for three years and nobody knows what it is. The ENT sprayed the back of my tongue with a chemical that caused it to peel and it was right back the next week. Which makes me think it something caused in the gastro area.

Do you have heartburn?

Customer replied 1029 days and 2 hours ago.

actually i forgot to tell you i had my family md prescribe me with nexium a few months ago because he thought that might be it. I think I do have stomach acid problems but that didn't help. I have been on a strict diet for the last couple weeks. Trying to cut out alcohol and other things that might trigger it, but I still don't know. Would Gonohrea or the mouth have showed up on a blood test? Is there any type of infection that could be in my body that I couldn't fight off without a certain type of antibiotic that maybe they haven't found?

I work at an infectious disease clinic and it doesn't sound like anything STD related. Usually that is ulcers, sores or bumps. Is your tongue dry with cracks in it?

Do you smoke?

Customer replied 1029 days and 2 hours ago.

No I do not smoke. They also tested me for diabetes. I am in good shape. I am a coach and 6'3 200lbs so im not over weight. I was reading my bible tonight and my mom had sent me this website so I sure hope you have the answer cause I felt like God led me your way. NO PRESSURE!!! lol

Gosh! No pressure! :)

The only thing that I really thing that it could be that they have deeply investigated is something gastric. You said that it is related to drinks like soda and gatorade and working out. I think that somehow it is related to your gastric secretions.

You said that you were on a strict diet...is that a low acid diet?

I can give you some suggestions that may help.

1. Try using an antacid for a few days.

2. Drink plenty of water and avoid soda, gatorade or any sugar-typr drinks for a few days.
Don't continue using an antacid for more than a few days. I can cause stomach problems of it's own. Three days should be plenty to see if it is going to work.
3. If you do drink gatorade (working out/coaching) drink a full glass of water after and swish your mouth out.

4. Avoid acidic foods and drinks.

This is my best advice. I will talk to the doctors that I work with to see if they have seen anything like this before. I am sure that one of them knows something.

Keep me posted!!!
