My niece was in a severe car accident. She was thrown out of the car, & ruptured her lower bowel, & tore open her colon. They had to cut off two 6" off of her bowel, & they sewed her colon back together. But they said that they had to leave her stomach wide open, so it could heal inside out. When she came out of surgery, they had a tube in her nose connected to her abdomen, because she was full of poison. And the surgeon told me that her bowels were going to be on a long long vacation. She had her accident on July 3rd, she still hasn't had anything to eat, & my father & I was there at the hospital yesterday, & the nurse told me that the Dr. had ordered her 2 units of blood. She still has a tube connected to her abdomen, & there is still a real dark stuff going into this bottle, coming out of her. Since the Dr. ordered 2 units of blood for, does that mean she is internally bleeding? Please answer this for me. &nb sp; Thank you,
Optional Information: Gender: FemaleAge: 38 tomorrowState/Country: Illinois Already Tried: She was thrown out of a car as passinger, ruptured her lower bowel. The weekend that it happened was 4th of July, gave her nothing except constant shots of morphine, with a button for her to push anytime for pain, & ice cold water, with swaub sticks to suck on. The Dr. cut her abdomen, from the chest down to her pubic line. The Dr. told me that her bowels were going into her abdomen,& that her colon had ripped open. He stitched her colon, but her bowels was going to sleep, & go on a long vacation. That she will not be able to eat, until she has gas. Well, the tube that they had in her nose, that was draining the poison out, she got frustrated with it last week, so she yank it out. I don't know if they had to open a new incision to put it back in, but they taped the bag to her stomach,& it's stillall open, & now they won't even let her have water. But as I said, the nurse told me yesterday the 25th, that the DR. had ordered 2 units of blood for her. I don't know how many units are in a pint, but I've heard on T.V. M.D., that 1 pint will survive 3 people. Please help.
Hello, It is looking from your description that your niece is suffering from the chronic blood loss which is also evident by description of red stuff coming out from tube. Operation on stomach are also liable to produce anemia. With presence of anemia & chronic (even small ) blood loss there may be decreased level of hemoglobin in the blood.Your surgeon is fulfilling the demand of the body by replenishing it from out. It is right that you have to wait for a long time for complete recovery of her as she had suffered from a severe amount of trauma . Hope you will find this helpful.

I know you're a specialist of this catagory, but that is more exactly what I said to the "Justanswer". So, you really didn't give me medical news, that I already know. I mean I know from what I see in her, that she will be in the hospital Intermediate Care for at least another 2 months. But for the Dr. to order that much blood, does it mean that she might have internal bleeding, or even gang green setting in, for pulling the tube out of her nose?
Sorry ,I will approach to you with in a hour. Sorry for inconvenience.
