I recently thought I had the flu. My legs are swollen and red and my back hurts. I went to the doctors and had blood tests and urnine tests done. The urine test showed ten times more red blood cells than a normal person. They are now sending my to an internal specialist I only have one kidney so I am a bit worried. I am diabetic (4Years). Any thoughts on what might me going on?Patricia
Hematuria is the presence of red blood cells (RBCs) in the urine.
It can be caused due to following factors-
Kidney or bladder stones
Urinary tract infection
Injury to the kidney
The high blood sugar level in the blood irritates blood vessels of these region and fluid can leak out of the irritated blood vessels to cause swelling in legs.
As such your doctor may advise you Ultrasound Whole Abdomen to rule out any kidney stone .
Your blood sugar monitoring should be done.
As you have hematuria and swollen legs acute renal failure should be ruled out.
I suggest you to consult your doctor for further evaluation and management.

I hope this helps.
