No diarrhea or constipation, no blood in stool, does not hurt more when he eats.

he may have acquired an infection which may soon manifest as diarrhea or abdominal cramping. he should see his doctor and get examination. it is also important to rule out appendicitis.. usually more pain, fever and vomiting but very common in young kids. you can give him prilosec OTC with the idea to take him to doctor for examination if worsen or spikes fever.

He is presently lieing down and has no pain, but the pains earlier were 2-3 seconds apart and knife piercing sharp where it took his breath away. But now he seems fine. It's been this way for past few days. He is also an athlete that works out with weights every other day. He is a basketball player. Could this have anything to do with his discomfort?

well it could be a pulled muscle but that should be a constant dull ache rather than sharp pain every 2-3 minutes . I would encourage that you take him to doctor and get checked out. it is important to rule out bowel perforation . He will need some sort of imaging either xray or CT based on what the ER doctor feels after examination.

What is bowel perforation?
Expert:  Salar replied 7 years ago.
bowel perforation is a condition in which there is a small rupture of colon leading to air in abdomen. it can cause intense abdominal pain and needs immediate evaluation.
