My mother had her thyroid chemically disabled many years ago. Her thyroid replacement drug has always been a very low dose - now her doctor told her to quit taking it completely. What is your thought on this?
Treatment for overactive thyroid gland does not always completely disable/destroy the thyroid gland. Over time, the gland may resume secreting increasing amounts of thyroid hormone, reducing or eliminating the need for thyroid replacement medications.

The doctor would need to closely follow the thyroid test after stopping the medication to be certain that she would not need a low dose.
