Dear tjo10

Thank you for writing to JustAnswer with your health question.

I believe you are likely referring to sepsis which is a condition where an infection has spread into the blood stream. Any infection elsewhere in the body can spread to the blood stream but it is more likely to happen when a person has a direct wound into the circulatory system such as an IV into a vein, or has had a traumatic injury, has had a major surgery, or has had an infection for a long time that was not treated.

It usually requires hospitalization and a course of IV antibiotics to get under control.
