Customer Question

I have had laryngitis for 12 days now. The doctor told me 3 days ago to just rest, drink plenty of fluids and not talk but it doesn't seem to be getting better. Are there not antibiotics I can take? Why wouldn't he have prescribed any?

Antibiotics are not always necessary for laryngitis.

You can try the following home treatment.

Plenty of fluids.
Tab. Motrin (OTC) 200 mg twice daily if you have pain.
Hexidine mouth wash (OTC) - use for mouth wash three times daily.

Another important home treatment is Menthol steam inhalation - add Menthol salts (available OTC) to a bowl of steaming water and inhale the steam two - three times daily - this will relieve the congestion.

If you are having nose block,

Antihistamines - Alavert 10 mg once daily (OTC)

Logenges: such Vicks cough logenges or any hard sweets constantly, this will cause a constant flow of saliva and give you relief. This is as important as a cough syrup.

If the symptoms persist beyond three days, or gets worse, you will need to see a doctor for a prescription for antibiotics.

I don't know if you received my reply.

You said if symptoms persists after 3 days to see a doctor for antibiotics. It's been 12 days and the doctor did not prescribe antibiotics, that's what is worrying me.

I don't have pain, I'm a little congested but not much.

I meant three days after trying out these OTC medicines.

If they do not work, then you should see the doctor and ask for antibiotics.
