Why do peoples eyes open when they die I recently witnessed

Resolved Question:

Why do people's eyes open when they die? I recently witnessed someone pass away, and initially his eyes were closed, but then they opened at the moment he was dying. He hadn't opened his eyes in nearly 20 hours, so I have a hard time believing he did this on his own power. Please help.

No, most peoples eyes do not open when they die.

However, one can get involuntary muscle twitches and jerks during the dying process if there is lack of oxygen to the brain, which could cause parts of the brain to "fire" up the neurons erratically, which could cause involuntary muscle contraction. So what you witnessed could have happened as a normal part of the dying process, but is not what happens in most people.
