severe congestion in in my nasal passages and sinuses for two months

Resolved Question:

I have had severe congestion in in my nasal passages and sinuses for two months. Started on holiday in Australia . Had a nightmare flight home. I feel that everything is dry and not any mucus. Doctor now feels it is not sinnusitis or allergy. Find it very hard to breathe some days and get very panicky as I think I will suffocate. I do have Alpa1 Antitrypsine deficiency but not sure that this is connected. Am now being referred to an ENT specialist but any suggestions. I feel that sometimes my passages feel as if they have closed up.

You are on maximal treatment already.

Has your GP had a look up your nose?

Yes, more than once. She said that my nose looked very red and there was some swelling of the tissue. I also forget to mention that sometimes I feel pressure across the sinuses into both ears and I feel most of the problem seems to be in the area at the top of my nose - into my sinus area.

This is a difficult problem that you have.

A couple of suggestions.

1. Switching from beconase to a more potent product such as Nasonex

2. A trial of Singular tablets - this is a leukotriene antagonist and can be of value in both asthma and rhinitis.

Can you tell me what Nasonex is and can I buy it over the counter?

What are Singular tablets and again can I get these over the counter at the chemist or are they a prescription drug?

Expert:  Dr J Burk replied 8 years ago.

These are both prescription only items.

Nasonex is a spray.

Singulair is a tablet.
