how serious is a widened mediastinum? I am being told that I have a questionable widened mediastinum on an AP view of my cervical spine.

Widening of mediatinum ( more than 8 cm on posterior-anterior chest x-ray) can be due to chest injury, aortic aneurysm, esophageal rupture, pericardial effusion, enlarged lymph nodes, lymphoma, thymoma, other medistinal masses & few more causes.

All of the above causes are serious enough to manadate further investigation to establish the exact cause. Further investigations may include 2D echo, MRI / CT scan or mediastinoscopy.
