Hi ,

Greetings.

Thank you for asking your question on Just Answer.

Peripheral neuropathy is involvement of peripheral nerves by a disease process. This can be due to a multitude of reasons-
  • Trauma or pressure on the nerve.
  • Diabetes
  • Vitamin deficiencies. B vitamins
  • Alcoholism.
  • Autoimmune diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and Guillain-Barre syndrome.
  • Other diseases. Kidney disease, liver disease and an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Inherited disorders like Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and amyloid polyneuropathy.
  • Exposure to poisons. including heavy metals, and certain cancer medications
You need a neurologist consult for detailed investigations for cause & further management.

You also need a lot of tests-
  • level of vitamin B-12
  • a urinalysis,
  • thyroid function tests
  • electromyography-nerve conduction studies
  • hemogram
  • nerve biopsy may be required
Treatment involves treatment of cause, NSAIDs like indomethacin, Tricyclic antidepressants like amitryptiline & anti-seizure medications like
gabapentin & carbamazepine & new drugs like lyrica.

I searched widely for connection between requip & peripheral neuropathy, but I did not find any. The known side-effects of ropinirole are-
  • Nausea and vomiting.

  • Sleepiness (somnolence).

  • Difficulty performing voluntary movements, resulting in jerky or involuntary movements or muscle twitches (dyskinesia).

  • Dizziness.

  • Low blood pressure (hypotension).

  • Fainting (syncope).

  • Abdominal pain.

  • Indigestion.

  • Confusion.

  • False perceptions of things that are not really there (hallucinations).

  • Swelling of the legs and ankles due to excess fluid retention (peripheral oedema).

  • Suddenly falling asleep.

  • Paranoia or delusions.

  • Inability to resist urges to gamble (pathological gambling).

  • Increased sex drive (libido) and excessive interest or involvement in sexual activity (hypersexuality).
