What kind of surgery is this person having? Are there any major risks involved due to advanced age or poor health?

Words of encouragement are always helpful. If the person is religious, then it can be helpful to bring in a minister, priest, rabbi or immam to comfort the preop patient. If the patient is superstitious, don't schedule the surgery for Friday the 13th. Basically anything that you can do or say to put the person's mind at ease and obtain a positive outlook will be helpful.
