Resolved Question:

I noticed a hard lump on my side, at the waist area, about the size of a nickel a couple of months ago. It is not sore. It hasn't changed. I can't move it when I touch it. It is under the skin...in other words it feels like a cyst not a boil or anything skin related.

it sounds like a lipoma- a fatty benign tumor just under the skin. if its round, not fixed and moveable, like you said you have nothing to worry about.
if it changes shape or gets red, tender, etc. call your dr.
there is no need to remove it unless it bothers you aestetically. sometimes they will shrink and go away on their own.
