When did you have the surgery?

Did you have any other treatment for the cancer?
Customer: replied 9 years ago.
Reply to Family Physician's Post: I had the surgery in 2000.

I had five treatments of chemo - 5FU & Lucivorian
along w/ 35 radiation treatments.

In that case you had a number of different treatments that can cause side effects and complications.

In patients who have had surgery AND radiation - they often do complain of some long term problems with diarrhea, and/or cramping. They may also have problems with adhesions which can cause abdominal pain and/or bowel obstructions.

Reply to Family Physician's Post: OK so far. What are the side effects of having that portion of the colon removed?
Expert:  Family Physician replied 9 years ago.
The most common symptoms would probably be pain, diarrhea, possibly fecal incontinence.

What complications or symptoms are you having?

The part of the colon that was removed - did what? As I understand it pulls a lot of the h2o out of the stool and this is where you get most of your vitamins?

I have some pain when gas or stool passes thru - not bad.

Lots of gas

very liquid stools - I am VERY careful passing gas and at night sleeping.

The function of the sigmoid is primarily storage for stool - VERY little absorption of nutrients is accomplished in the colon. Almost all nutrients are absorbed in the small intestines, along with much of the water.

After a sigmoid resection I would NOT expect vitamin deficiency to develop.
