What is diagnosis code 356.9 (IDIO PERIPH NEURPTHY NOS) mean

Resolved Question:

Bad headaches w/right eye pain/swelling. Clusmy lately; falling down and bumping into things. My neuro ordered labs after white dots showed up on my MRI. MRA was unremarkable. The diagnosis codes used on the orders were 784.0 & 356.9.

Reply to Family Physician's Post: My question was...what does 356.9 Unspecified Idiopathic Peripheral Neuropathy mean in layman terms???
Expert:  Family Physician replied 9 years ago.
I'm sorry - I misunderstood.

Neuropathy is a term use to describe "nerve damage"
Idopathic is a term which means "unknown cause"
NOS - "Not otherwise specified" - it doesn't fit into any of the more specific diagnosis codes in the same subsection.

Reply to Family Physician's Post: Would this type of code be used when testing for MS?
Expert:  Family Physician replied 9 years ago.
There are a number of different things that can cause peripheral neuropathy - MS would be one of the possibilities.

Here is a list of some of the other possible causes
