What Is Concentric Annular Disc Bulge?

Customer Question

What is the medical definition for concentric annular disc bulge?

The term refers to a type of herniated (bulging) intervertebral disc between two spinal vertebrae.

This has been called a "slipped disc" and other less descriptive terms.

If the bulge presses against a spinal nerve root (see link), it causes low back pain. The precise location of the pain will depend upon the location of the disc and what spinal nerve root it contacts. If the pressure is on one of the roots that make up the sciatic nerve, the pain will radiate all the way down the lower extremity; this condition is known as "sciatica."
