Customer Question

3 1/2 year old with chills (visibly shaking), fever and sore throat. Quick strep test was negative this afternoon. 24 hour swab test result due tomorrow. Parents dressed him in sweats to stop the chills. Alternating tylenol & ibuprofin. Are they doing the right thing?

Hello,

Poor little guy is experiencing symptoms of a viral illness, in his case a cold and sore throat. When these symptoms occur with shaking chills or a high fever, it usually means a more serious infection is present. Uncontrollable shaking chills that occur with a high fever can also make his teeth chatter The chills and shaking are usually caused by the release of bacteria into the bloodstream and a severe infection, which could be strep.

Dress how ever he is comfortable. It may be better to dress him in his PJ's and cover him with a sheet and blanket, rather than having such heavy clothing on. The reason is that he may begin to feel too warm from the fever.

Did the doctor give him any antibiotics?

Reply to Deborah's Post: No antibiotics yet. He just finished a course of them on Saturday for a double ear/eye infection (so did his 8 month old sister). I think treatment will depend on results of 24 hr swab test.

Often a prescription is given "just in case" and I am of the belief it is always better to be sure what the test results bring, especially as he just finished a course of antibiotics on Saturday.

Keep an eye on him tonight. I don't know what time zone you're in, but as they say-- "thank heaven for 7-11" --- If at all possible, I would have somone go out and get him some ice pops. This will soothe his throat and help keep him hydrated as he may not want to drink as his throat hurts too much. No matter how sick a kid is, they are never too sick for ice pops.

Try to offer him water or whatever else he would like to drink. Make sure to keep an eye on how much he urinates.
