DENTIST ADVICE re Broken False Tooth on a 3-Unit Bridge

Customer Question

The porcelin middle false tooth on a 3-Unit Bridge (Upper #5 thru #7) has broken. The false tooth is the canine. The front portion of the false tooth cracked off as sort of a sliver and has left most of the back portion of the false tooth. The metal is fine. X-rays have been taken and the two caps on either end are fine. No decay. The bridge is about 12 to 14 years old. A dentist explained to me that just trying to fix the false tooth is a problem, because composite material (the material he would use to create the tooth) is designed to adhere to tooth material, not porcelin. He said the composite material might last two days or two years. The only effective way he said to repair the tooth is to remove the entire bridge and create a new one. That's going to cost over $2,500. Is there any other way to fix the problem other than to replace the whole bridge?

Hi Peter

Sounds like you need to see someone who actually makes partials and dentures. Dentists usually send them out to companies who do this. Since the partial is older, I'm not sure if they can fix it, but it is sure worth a try if it will save you that kind of money!

This link is to buy a denture repair kit, and do it yourself, but I've never personally tried it:

And this link is to find a denture repair person in your area:

I wish you the best and hope this helps.

Reply to Kerry's Post: Dear Kerry, Your suggestion to see someone who actually makes partials and dentures leads me to believe that you misunderstood my situation. This is not a partial or a denture. It is not removeable. A 3-unit bridge is made to bridge the gap where a tooth needed to be removed and the two adjoining teeth were ground down in preparation to receive the bridge which consisted of a cap on each end and a false tooth in the middle. A piece of metal connects the two outer teeth bridging the gap where the middle tooth is missing and porcelin is fused onto the bare metal in a hot oven at high temperatures and a false tooth is cast in porcelin and positioned in the middle and fused onto the metal at high temperatures in the oven between the two capped end teeth and sits where the missing middle tooth would be. Since you cannot fuse porcelin onto metal without high temperatures, it is impossible to fuse a new porcelin false tooth onto the bridge since the bridge is a permanent piece of dental work in the mouth. Thanks for your effort and your time.

Dear XXXXX,

I am not a dentist, but I believe that there is other types of "composite" material that will bond to the area where the tooth is missing. In my opinion, I think that you should do some "shopping around", and speak with some other dentists that "will" be willing to help you at a more affordable price. I know that there are other dentists out there that would work in your price range.

Good luck to you.
