Folded blankets placed in pillow cases can be substituted for pillows.OR• Lie on either side with your knees drawn up in the fetal position. You may use a small pillow under your head.
Also, another thing I have found that works for me is to place a pillow under my hip. It cuts down on my hip digging into the mattress.

Sorry, I didn't realize from your initial post that you could not lay on your back at all I thought that you had found that laying on your side was most comfortabe. Hope JoAnn's answer helps then and I will delete mine.
