I purchased a used 295 Garmin aviation unit and tried it out

Customer Question

I purchased a used 295 Garmin aviation unit and tried it out in flight yesterday. The destination bug on navigation page was completely off the mark. Had to use track and bearing to find destination. What's up with that?
JA: What is the exact model of your Garmin? And can you guesstimate how old it is?
Customer: Garmin 295. Last updated 2007.
JA: What happened right before this popped up?
Customer: Nothing. Prior to departure I entered the destination identifier and hit Go To.
JA: What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: None. Don't have user manual.
JA: Anything else you want the gps expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: Nope

Due to the age of that unit, this is what I suggest.. A full all points covered update.

Theres three main areas we need to be concerned with. The Aviation map data files, the region file, and the internal software. Below are three links that address each area.

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/digital/shop-by-accessories/maps/avdb/gpsmap-295-americas-north-navdata-sup-sup-database/prod31638.html

And here is a video that covers the update process.

Though each individual page should also have update instructions on it.

If you get stuck or have any further questions, let me know.

I strive to provide great service, and greatly appreciate a 5 star rating clicked and submitted when you are satisfied.. I always answer follow up questions.

An update does not seem to be a logical solution. The destination airport has not moved or changed its identifier during the lifetime of this unit.

The software updates help the antennaes accurately track and connect with the gps sattelites...

And while it may not seem like you need a map file or region update, those are also parts of the software that can degrade over time like any data can.. A reinstall of all three major pieces of software and the databases within are what is needed to restore accuracy in these type of devices, whether aviation, hiking or automotive.

The only alternative diagnosis would be that the internal logic board has faulted, as any machine loses its reliability / accuracy and precision over time. I figure the updates are mainly free, its only the Jeppensen database that costs anything ( 50$ )

And that would be a less expensive fix then even one of the lowest cost, modern Aviation GPS offerings.

Though, there is a lot to be said for a unit thats over ten years newer...
