1) Is this unit an "LM" model - that comes with Lifetime Map updates?

2) The AGE of the device?

3) WHEN was this device last used SUCCESSFULLY?

OK - that means that the map files may have been "lost" - or just "misplaced".

I understand. What I would LIKE to do FIRST is a Master Reset of the device - to see if we can get the files to reappear (without reloading - which can take a LONG TIME).

But let me ask if you - or anyone else - may have connected the device to a computer and deleted ANY files found there?

OK - very good.

*** CAUTION for the future ***

Files should almost NEVER be deleted manually - when the device is attached to a computer.

Let me send you a link to a program you will need to UPDATE your device software and maps. This program (Garmin Express) will need to be downloaded and installed on the computer.

Then you will want to RUN the program, and THEN attach the device to the computer.

Then device should then be found, and ADDED to the program's screen, and from there you can UPDATE the device.

Please allow plenty of TIME for the updates to be downloaded and applied to the device.

OK - is there ANYTHING (text) that says what MAP you have?

Here is an attached image of one of devices I have, and notice the "Map" area. Do you have that showing?

I understand - and it would NOT appear if this device had Egypt maps installed originally.

So do you see ANY "Map" data AT ALL?

If not, has a memory card been installed (or removed) from the device?

Can you find the Serial Number of the device and send it back to me?

That serial number SHOULD be located

On the bottom of the unit, inside an outlined box (remove mounting bracket to view).

OK - that looks like the "device id".

Please click on the TOOLS icon in Garmin Express, and copy the Serial Number from there.

OK - that's interesting, as my lookup tool is NOT finding that particular unit.

So let's go ahead and TRY the master reset I mentioned earlier. I have the steps below.

Note: A master reset will erase all favorites and will restore your device to the default factory settings. If you would like to back up your favorites to your computer.

To perform a master reset on a nuvi 40 series devices:

  1. Start with the device OFF and unplugged from power (or the computer)
    • To verify the device is powered off and not in standby mode, press and hold down the power button until prompted to turn off the device
  2. Press and hold the lower right hand corner of the display portion of the touchscreen
  3. Power on the device while continuing to hold the display
  4. Remove your finger from the touchscreen when "Erase all user data?" appears
  5. Touch Yes
    • If text language is not in English, this is the button on the right

The device will now reset. Follow the on-screen prompts and then place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.

NOTE: Although the master reset will erase all saved favorites, any loaded custom points of interest will remain intact on the device.

After the reset, go DIRECTLY to the Map/info screen - to see if the maps have reappeared.

Do this BEFORE connecting to the computer.

Thanks for that. That screen shot is telling you that the Garmin servers - to update the Express program - can not be reached at this time and from your location. That would NOT affect the device itself.

Back to the device status:

I can only assume that some of the files that define what maps were installed originally have been deleted.

To get those files restored, you will need to contact Garmin Support for your area - since I don't have any records of that serial number device available.

I know it is late there, so you will want to contact the support folks during "normal business hours" - in most cases. I have their contact information below.

One last thing you MIGHT want to try is to REMOVE the memory card from the device (while OFF), and then reboot the device.

Then check the Map info and Garmin Express Tools screen again - to see if the maps have reappeared.
