Hi Debra. My name is*****'m sorry that you are having this problem, especially while you are on vacation. I will do my best to help. Does it look as though the Nuvi might be "frozen"? If so, we can try a "soft reset" where you won't lose data.
Can you tell me please exactly what model your Nuvi is?

To perform a master reset on a nuvi 30, 40, 50, 52, and 54 series devices:
The device will now reset. Follow the on-screen prompts and then place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.
1Although the master reset will erase all saved favorites, any loaded custom points of interest will remain intact on the device.

Do you by any chance have a computer with you that you can connect the Garmin Nuvi to? Can you try moving it to a different location?

It appears that you have the latest update since you have 4.0. Do you have the garmin Express software install on your laptop?

It is possible that you may need to re-register the device after having set it to factory defaults. You can do this using the Garmin Express software on your laptop. If you don't have it installed, you can download it here.
I can't help but wonder if the battery issue is not contributing to the issues that you are having. It is possible that it just needs to charge a bit more and be left where it can pick up the satellites and it may then begin to work correctly. Please keep me posted as to your progress
