Hello & Welcome to Just Answer,
Sorry to hear of the issue you are having with your GPS.
May I ask:
1) The FULL Make & Model Number of the device you are working with?
2) The AGE of the device?
3) WHEN this issue first began?
Thanks
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
nuvi Dont no the age but I updated it a couple.months ago
Expert:  Greg A. replied 1 year ago.
Hi again,
Can you get the Model Number for me? That should be printed on the device somewhere - usually the back - right after the word Nuvi.
And can you "guess" at the age of the device?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Expert:  Greg A. replied 1 year ago.
Hi again and thanks for that.
OK - just saw your model number reply. Let me check to make sure I have the steps for seeing what maps you have installed.
By the way - may I ask WHERE you are located NOW (city & state is fine).
Thanks

Expert:  Greg A. replied 1 year ago.
OK - very good.
If you can, please go to the View Map screen and VERIFY that the DETAILED maps for your local area are shown on that screen (not just MAJOR roads).
Then we will want to check the Maps that are currently installed. I'll get those steps next.
Expert:  Greg A. replied 1 year ago.
Starting at the MAIN screen,
Touch TOOLS, then Settings, then Map, then MAP INFO button (at the bottom of the screen).
Please let me know EXACTLY what you see on that screen - including ALL lines of TEXT and any icons you may see.
Thanks

Expert:  Greg A. replied 1 year ago.
Hi again and thanks for checking that for me.
I believe the "NE" at the end of the last line is telling us the issue.
That is that you have the North East states installed, and that Kansas City MO may not be including in that map set.
Let me double-check to be sure.
Also, I did NOT see if you have an SD card installed in your device - to hold the maps when you update them. Can you let me know if you have such a card and if it is installed?
Thanks
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I do
Expert:  Greg A. replied 1 year ago.
Hi again,
OK - I just verified that Missouri is NOT included in the NE states list. You can see ALL the regions listed at the following page.
https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={80e6d330-f2e0-11dd-f45b-000000000000}
So what will need to be done is that the maps for that region OR ALL the states will have to be installed on the device (or SD card). That MAY take some time (an hour or more) if you don't have the maps downloaded on your computer already, so be ready for that time.
May I ask what program (or tool) you last used to update your device maps? Would that be Garmin Express, or some other tool?
Thanks

How do I add maps
Expert:  Greg A. replied 1 year ago.
Hi again and thanks for that.
OK - if this was done via email I suspect that there was also an instruction to update the maps using Garmin Express - with a link to where to get that program installed on your computer.
Do you remember doing that installation, adding your device to the main program screen, and then doing the update?
Do you also remember HOW LONG the update took AND if the program told you about having "limited space" for storing ALL the maps?
Thanks
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I have to get off my phone now. Can u send me instrunctions for loading the maps to my email? ***@******.***
Expert:  Greg A. replied 1 year ago.
Hi again,
I can't send them directly to your email, but if you registered that email when you signed up here, you should get a link back to this page, where I will post my "procedure" for updating the maps on a Nuvi device.
I will post that right after I send this message.
Thanks, ***** *****

Here is the update procedure I mentioned. I hope this helps.
How to Update Garmin Nuvi Maps.
===============================
What is needed?
1) A WORKING device with some previous version of maps installed.
2) A computer and USB cable (to be able to connect the device to the computer).
3) An SD card (or microSD & SD adapter) of 4GB or 8GB (maximum) capacity. This MAY be optional, but is HIGHLY recommended. A link to where you can get an 8GB SD card is listed in the "resources" section below.
4) A current copy of "Garmin Express" installed on your computer. This is Garmin's recommended program (tool) for doing any updates, including device software AND maps. If you need to get a copy of Garmin Express, use the link below.
Click Here --> http://software.garmin.com/express.html
How is it done? Steps to Update device software and Maps.
==========================================================
Step 1) FULLY charge your device and then TEST it - without being connected to the charger or power adapter. This is to TEST the battery life of the device, as there are portions of this procedure (unit software update) that NEED the battery to be in good shape to successfully update your device. Once you confirm that the device will successfully operate for at least 15-20 minutes, then it should be safe to move on - AFTER FULLY charging the device again.
Step 2) Once the device is charged up again, you are ready to check and update the unit software ONLY! This is prepare the device with any updates that may be needed to recognize the SD card that is to be inserted in the next step, and to be able to store the updated map data on that card.
Step 2a) Connect the fully charged device to your computer via the USB cable and WAIT. After a few seconds (or perhaps minutes), the computer SHOULD recognize the device as a "removable storage" device, and allow you to "see the device" as such. NOTE: If the computer asks you if you want to "fix" the storage device in any way, respond by saying NO! You do NOT want to change the device at all right now, but just have it recognized and seen by the computer.
Step 2b) Start the Garmin Express program and make sure it "sees" your device. Once it does, the program SHOULD open in the "Updates" tab, and show you any updates that are available to the unit software and or maps. Do NOT try any map updates just yet, as all we are interested in at this time is the unit software.
Step 2c) Go ahead and load any need software updates, and give PLENTY of time for the updates to successfully load onto the device. Now this next part is CRITICAL ... When the program says it is OK to remove the device from the computer, WAIT an extra 60 seconds to make SURE all the software is written to the device. After this wait, remove the device from the USB cable and allow it to reboot. Allow it to power up if it does that "automatically", and let it settle on the main screen. Then take a quick look at the "Where To?" and "View Map" screens, just to make sure they can be reach without any issue. Then power the device OFF and back ON again, and check the rest of the screens - just to make sure they still work.
Step 3) Now power the device OFF, and insert the SD card. The card SHOULD go in easily - with a firm push and should "latch" into place, so do NOT force the card in.
Step 4) Reconnect the device to the USB cable and run Garmin Express again - to get the map updates.
NOTE: This can take a LONG time - depending on your internet and computer speed.
Step 4a) Find and click on the "Map Update" section in Garmin Express. If you do not have prepaid updates available, maps can be purchased directly from Garmin Express.
Step 4b) Run the download and install section of the program, and allow plenty of time for the maps to transfer to your device.
When the program says it is OK to remove the device from the computer, WAIT an extra 60 seconds to make SURE all the software is written to the device. After this wait, remove the device from the USB cable and allow it to reboot.
Once all this is done, TEST the device again - to make sure all is well with the new maps and the device.

Sounds like a long process. I have been too busy to start it. It will be very difficult to follow all those instructioms on my phone. My phone keeps going dark. Why cant u send it via email?

How do I charge my Garmin? I dont have a plug in for it.
Expert:  Greg A. replied 1 year ago.

Hi again,

We experts here have no access to ANY of your private information - including your email. BUT, if you signed up here with your email address, there should be links waiting for you back to this question thread. Perhaps your email program can take you to this page and you can view the instructions from there?

And sorry about the "format" of the instructions here. This system is not the best when it comes to displaying the information in the form I put it in. This is because it likes to CHANGE the format - to fit YOUR screen size, regardless of what device you are using to see the instructions (like a computer or tablet or cell phone).

As for charging your device, you can either use your computer and its USB port, or the Vehicle power adapter. But I will tell you that using a computer to charge MAY take a while longer than a higher power adapter (like the vehicle power adapter), because the computer ports only puts out about 1 half to 1 third the power or the vehicle power adapter.

Please let me know when you get a chance to try the instructions for your device.

And if this has answered your question(s), please take a moment to rate MY service level (Excellent is my goal) so that I get credit for helping you with this question.
You should see some "smiley faces" or "stars" to do that, but please let me know if you do NOT see them or can not use them.

I will rate u after I complete the process.
Expert:  Greg A. replied 1 year ago.

Thanks so much.

Just a note: The "system" here does send out "reminder" notes every so often to come back and complete the process. So please don't be surprised if those show up for you.

And we CAN still correspond AFTER rating, so please don't feel that you will be "cut off" by that process.

I will look for your results a little later on.

Take Care & Travel Safe, Greg A.
