If the battery wont hold a charge, I agree with your assessment. The battery on that S1 must be at least 2 or 3 years old and it needs to be replaced.
Garmin will repair it and replace the battery for a flat rate fee. The cost is substantial.
Ive recommended an alternative before, at less then half the cost. The company on this page will supply the battery, replace it, and ship it back to you all at a very reasonable cost
