What brand of gps is your device? Magellan, tomtom, garmin etc.?
Magellan ( Model Map 330 GPS. p/n 800470-01, s/n0056948 (?). Hand held unit.
Have you tried installing a fresh set of batteries?

how far are you from the last place you had a valid gps position?

I kept it on for several hours, and it finally picked up the satellites. I will try it again tomorrow.

No problem. Sometimes with older units like yours, it can take a while. Also if it is quite a distance from the last place it had a signal it will make it harder to not find a signal.
