Before creating and transferring custom mapping, ensure the device firmware is up-to-date with WebUpdate

  • To convert a file to JPEG:
  1. Open GIMP

  2. Select File
  3. Select Open
  4. Locate and select the image map file
  5. Click Open
  6. If you are importing a PDF file, change the resolution to 300 pixels/inch on the import page
  7. Click Import
  8. Click the rectangle selection tool (Or press R on your keyboard)
  9. Draw a box around the map
  10. Select Image from the menu
  11. Select Crop to Selection
  12. Select File from the menu
  13. Click Save As
  14. Type in the filename
  15. Expand Select File Type (By Extension)
  16. Select JPEG image
  17. Click Save
  18. Adjust Quality slider to 100%
  19. Click Save

  • To create a custom map from a JPEG file:
  1. Open Google Earth
  2. Zoom in to the approximate area that the custom map will cover
  3. Select Add from the menu
  4. Select Image Overlay
  5. Name the map file
  6. Click Browse
  7. Locate and select the JPEG map file
  8. Click Open
  9. The map will need to be resized to match the satellite image
    • Adjust the transparency bar between 50% and 70% while resizing the image
    • Start at one corner and zoom in
    • Position the mouse cursor over the corner and click and drag that corner to the approximate correct position (focus on the roads closest to the corner)
    • Move the map to the opposite corner and reposition it as well
    • Repeat for each corner
    • Double check all the corners again and adjust as necessary Change the Transparency back to 100% Opaque
    • If you are finished resizing the custom map, select the Altitude tab
    • If you desire to see the custom map above all other maps, Change the Draw Order to 50 or higher
    • If you desire to see the custom map below all other maps, Change the Draw Order to 49 or lower
    • Click OK
  10. Locate Places (to the left of the map)
  11. Locate your Custom Map (it will be named according to step 5)
  12. Right-click on the Map Name
  13. Select Save Place As...
  14. Save the map to either (Garmin device drive) /Garmin/CustomMaps/ or (microSD Card drive) /Garmin/CustomMaps/
  15. Eject and unplug your device from the computer
  16. If necessary, power on your device
