Hello & Welcome,

Different expert here.

When you went through the reset process, did the unit ask you if you wanted to "clear user data"? If so, did you answer "Yes"?

Thanks
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
did not ask clear user data
Expert:  Greg A. replied 2 years ago.
Hi again,

If it did NOT ask to clear the user data, then the unit was not reset. Please me see if we can get that done. Below are the instructions to do a Master Reset. Make sure the message about clearing the data comes up and that you touch Yes. After that, make sure you take the unit to a place where it can find the satellite signals so that it can find your current location.

============================

To perform a master reset on nuvi 30, 40, and 50 series devices:

Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings.

  1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power
  2. Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
  3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON
  4. Release the power button when the device powers ON
    • You will see a new message: "Do you really want to erase all user data?"
  5. Remove your finger from the touch screen when this message displays
  6. Touch Yes
    • If text language is not in English, this is the button on the right

The device will now reset. Follow the on-screen prompts and then place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites. This could take up to 15 minutes.

============================

Please give that a try and let me know what happens or if you have more questions.

Thanks, XXXXX XXXXX

was able to erase user data; gps simulator can not be switched to off; red x on satelite bars
Expert:  Greg A. replied 2 years ago.
Did you take the unit to a clear area immedately after the reset?

I only ask because these units should not go to simulate mode unless they can not find the satellite signals.

Thanks

i will try again and let you know

And when?

Hi again,

It is NOT normal to get 2 units in a row that don't function, but it does happen in some markets.

What I would do is take the unit back for replacement - since it has been only a few days since purchase.

What I would also do is speak with store manager - not the first-line returns people - and explain what happened (2 units failed) and see if they can get you a new one AND get it working for you - right there at the store. I know this sounds like a bit of "extra effort" for the store folks (and you), but if the manager really wants to keep your business they should do it.

I would not "get mad" or anything like that, but I would be "firm" and let them know that I could just "go down the road" to a different store and get a working unit from them. If the manager is really concerned about "customer service & satisfaction", they will provide this service for you. If they do not do this, then I would recommend getting a refund and going to another store (another Target, Wal-mart, etc.) where they will treat you right.

That's just my opinion, but right now almost every department store and electronics shop has these things on sale - because of the "shopping season", and you should be able to pick one up almost anywhere.

I hope this helps. Please let me know what you find or if you have more questions.

Take Care, Greg A.

after all i have described do you really think i got two bad units in a row it is odd that the only setting that cant be changed is the gps simulator function that shuts off satelite reception when it is on. i guess my only recourse is to get a refund and try a different model although i like the 5" screen any thoughts about a replacement

Hi again,

Let me ask you this: When you go to the screen that shows that the Simulate mode is ON, can you touch that screen anywhere and have the ON change to OFF?

Thanks
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
no the simulation stays on
Expert:  Greg A. replied 2 years ago.
OK - Let me make sure we are referring to the same screen.

Please try the following and let me know what happens.

Start at the main screen and then touch Settings
then System
then GPS Simulator
then Off.

Once that is done, touch either Save or OK, and then Back until you are back at the main screen.

Please let me know if that works or if anything is missing from those screens.

Thanks
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
went to settings ;gps simulator; off; ok; back to main ; simulator stays on will not switch to off
Expert:  Greg A. replied 2 years ago.
Hi again,

That sounds strange and should not really happen.

At this point I could recommend that you try a software update (free), but it will mean that you have to install a small program on your computer called WebUpdater to do that, and to connect the unit to your computer for that process. Below is a link that explains the whole process, and will allow you to perform that process.

WebUpdater <-- Click Here

You can try that process and if it still does not work, then I would recommend returning the unit to the store, as I mentioned above.

Please let me know what you decide or if you have more questions.

Thanks, XXXXX XXXXX
