The most common problem for this is the lock actuator. The second is broken wiring in the rubber boot in the jam of the gate. You can pull this boot back and inspect for broken wires.

To fix the lock the actuator needs to be replaced. You need to remove the trim panel on the gate. You can manually open the gate from the inside with a screwdriver if the gate is stuck closed.
