I have a 2005 GMC SIERRA 1500 CREW CAB 4X4 5.3 ENGINE Z-71 PACKAGE. My check engine light came on the other day. I have a friend with a code reader and It said emission leak. He reset the light for now. I'm wondering If i should start with a new gas cap? Any other ideas?

Hello, I'm Chris.I will do my best to answer your question fast and accurate using the info you have provided. Thanks for visiting Just Answer.
Was the code for a emissions concern or an EVAP concern?
If it was for a large or small EVAP leak then yes it would be a good starting point to replace the fuel cap. www.rockauto.com has about 8 of them from factory to aftermarket ranging from 5-12$
I wasn't outside when my friend checked It. When he came back In all he said was his tester said emissions leak. He's a very good mechanic and his suggestion was to start out first with a new gas cap. I did have a check gas cap light come on a few months ago. So I'm going to go with the gas cap first. If That doesn't take care of it, then I'll look into the vent solenoid and canister. Thank You very much for your help.
Glad I could help.
