Hello, I'm Cam. Please include all the details about your issue so I can accurately advise you. I cannot see your vehicle so please be detailed.
Is the transmission fully in park?
i have pushe the shhifter all the way up and the console says its in park
OK, did it feel normal when you shifted to park?
yes nothing felt odd and the transmission when put in drive is sluggish to start out its almost like its not there.
Is the check engine light on?
yes it is i did ask you guys what the problem was before and thats why i changed out the electronic relay.
what codes are set?
This could be the ignition switch itself,
what do you mean by codes how do i found out codes
this is done with a scan tool and most parts stores will scan for free.
there is that little button on the colunm that releases the key i use that to get the key out and i do have a scan tool but i plugged it in and it doesnt turn on to read any codes
Check the CIGAR fuse for the scan tool not powering up.
the button of course is under the cover of the steering colunm
yes, it is the manual release.
but the ignition switch isnt going to screw up the gearing in the transmission is it
the ignition switch isnt going to screw up the shifting though is it
these operate on a ground signal.
sorry computer screwed up
THe ignition sends power to the transmission directly then the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) provides the ground to operate the valve. It is a VERY common issue on these vehicles, bad contacts in the ignition switch
so not the relay like i was told before
its the switch itself
that is one very likely issue, yes.
ok well the cigar lighter doesnt work so i will find the fuse and replace it so i can get codes
it will tell me if the ignition switch is out
the codes i mean
If you get codes like P0753, P0758, P1810 , then yes it is the switch
i have to run to he store for a new mini fuse
i have codes P0758,P0740,P0753,P1860
Those are the codes.
so does this mean that i have all these problems
Simple test, take the lower trim off the steering column, use a wire to jump the red to the white wire, both thick in the switch and see what happens
with the cat on or off
and see what happens, see how it drives.
do i clear the codes
no, it does not matter. When power is back it will shift .
before i drive the service light is still on is that ok
yes, that is fine.
ok it seems to drive normally i couldnt really get up to 55 but it seemed to shift
Replace the ignition switch then to correct this.
Does the key come out of the column now?
ok is it pretty hard to do or should i have a certified mechanic do it
no the key does not
It is not bad.
As for the key, that is liekly the wiring into the side of the shifter under the console. It breaks from the movement of the shifter.
Why these happened at the same time is hard to say.
but could i have the timing off in the ignition with the relay i switched out
If you slide the switch out then you could have changed the timing.
the electronic relay that goes into the ignition
In the column?
but would that not let the key out
yes in the column
Do you have a part number?
of the relay
or 04 1591 00
So the igntion switch itself, not a relay.
yes i mean not the part the key goes into
Strange then that you have those codes now and it does not shift. Sounds like a faulty switch. Timing could be an issue, but then does it crank properly in start position?
That is the cylinder,
yes but it doesnt have like three turns like normal i mean one turn elcet turns (acc) then it turn the ignition
when you turn it off it doesnt go any further
it dor\es snap back after turning the key on
Ok, use THIS DOCUMENT to remove and install the switch timed correctly.
ok thank you
