I have a 2016 Yukon and hear a noise coming from shifter

Customer Question

I have a 2016 Yukon and hear a noise coming from shifter when going from P to R or R to P but when going from R to forward gears. It's not quite a click, not quite springy. Any ideas?

Hi there,

The noise is probably normal operation of the shift interlock.

The solenoid prevents removal of the shifter from park unless the brake pedal is depressed with ignition on.

Safety feature for non-driving occupants.

Thanks. I don't believe it is normal because it wasn't making the noise before.

Hi again,

I have had cars that make a little more sound than normal.

Would you think it would normally make a slight sound, and now it is making a louder than normal sound?

Sometimes the lubrication has worked out of the mechanism and they become noisy.

It's got about 1000 miles on it and was quiet as a mouse and now its a squeaky click that just doesn't sound normal. I had a 900 Tahoe before and never had a noise this pronounced.

If the car is still new, I would take it back to the dealer.

It may have design fault that the manufacturer may be aware of.
