Hi,

Most converters last from 5 to 10 yrs, some as long as 15yrs. the rattling in yours will one of two things - either a heat shield on it is loose or the inside has come apart.

there are many things that can cause a converter to fail prematurely:

poorly tuned engine
leaking fuel injectors
faulty fuel pressure regulator
faulty O2 sensor
internal coolant leak allowing coolant into exhaust
engine burning oil

I have found most of the time that a converter fails, it is due to either running too rich, burning oil or coolant, or leaking fuel injectors.
