Welcome to JustAnswer.com! My name is DriveFast71(Ron) and I will do my best to answer all of your questions completely and accurately.

When the ABS light is on, this is the warning symbol that there is a problem with the anti-lock braking system. Unfortunately, there are literally dozens of parts/sensors in the ABS system and to take a "guess" as to what the problem is, or how much it will cost just isn't very efficient. Most commonly, this will be a faulty Wheel Speed Sensor (aka ABS Sensor) however, the best bet is to have it put on a diagnostic scan-tool and find out where the problem lies "for sure" as replacing parts at random will get costly and frustrating very quickly. Most shops charge around $40-$65 for this scan, but, like I say, it's the only way to know for sure where the problem lies.

Where can I find out more details on the possible dozen of parts/sensors in the ABS system to better understand the possible, highest-to-lowest costs in advance of any diagnosed problem via scans? I would like to have some better idea of what I am dealing with before going too far down the diagnostic 'road'... is it a $50, $100, $500 or other problem.

Like I say- impossible to know for sure where the problem lies without a scan. There isn't a mechanic on the planet that can look at the ABS light and say 'the problem is this...". I would suggest getting the diagnostic scan done, as it's the best place to start. No sense in working yourself up over a $1000 control module when it's simply a $150 wheel speed sensor.

Here is a breakdown of some of the parts monitored in the ABS system. Also included, but not shown, are the 3 wheel speed sensors, electronic brake control module and hydraulic control assembly.
