1994 gmc: power steering pump..the bolts out does the pulley..Dave

Hi I need to take power steering pump off a 1994 gmc k1500 350ci the pulley has no holes for a socket to go through to get the bolts out does the pulley have to come off and how? Thanks,Dave

Hello and welcome to Just, Super mechanic here. About your vehicle.


Yes the pulley has to come off first. There is a tool for that, (as well as putting it back on) that you can normally borrow from Autozone. Here is the procedure.



















  • J 25034-B Puller
  • J 25033-B Pulley Installer


  • Place a drain pan below the pump.
  1. Hoses. Cap the hoses.
  2. Unload the tensioner assembly.
  3. Belt.
  4. Pulley (35).
    • Install J 25034-B. Be sure the pilot bolt bottoms in the pump shaft by turning the nut to the top of the pilot bolt.
    • Hold the pilot bolt.
    • Turn the nut counterclockwise.
  1. Front mounting bolts (36).
  2. Pump (33).


  1. Pump (33).
  2. Mounting bolts (36). TIGHTEN
    • Bolts to 50 Nm (37 lbs. ft.) .
  1. Brace (38). TIGHTEN
    • Nut (40) to 50 Nm (37 lbs. ft.).
    • Bolt to 33 Nm (24 lbs. ft.).
  1. Pulley
    • Place pulley on the end of the pump shaft.
    • Install J 25033-B. Be sure the pilot bolt bottoms in the shaft by turning the nut to the top of the pilot bolt.
    • Hold the pilot bolt.
    • Turn the nut clockwise.
    • Install pulley flush ±0.25 mm (0.010 in.) with the end of the power steering pump shaft.

NOTICE: Do not use arbor press or Internal damage to the pump will result.

  1. Belt.
  2. Load the tensioner assembly.
  3. Hoses.
    • Fill and bleed the system.


  • Hoses for clearance.
