Question

Sentry dogs in the Military

Sent to General Experts October 21, 2006 8:58 p.m.

When the US Military began using dogs, they at first had a very general accpeptance program for any dog someone may want to donate for military service, the standards as written;
The Quartermaster General called for "any purebred dog of either sex, physically sound, between the ages of one and five years, with characteristics of a watch-dog,"

As more was learned about dogs the standards were re-written and nine breeds were accepted for use as Sentry and Messenger dogs.
They were.

1. Doberman Pinscher
2. Airedale
3. Boxer
4. Collie
5. Retrievers
6. German Shepherd
7. Great Dane
8. ?????
9. ?????
Your question, should you decide to try, is, what were the last two breeds approved to be used Sentry and Messenger dogs for the US military?

Hello Customer (name blocked for privacy),

I spent over an hour searching on the Internet to find any useful info however I believe the only reliable info can be found on the website of Department of Defense Military Working Dog Center and there's no specific info on Sentry and Messenger dogs on their pages. Here is the page to their Work Statement where they describe the breeds accepted, the page is intended for potential vendors:
http://dodmwd.lackland.af.mil/vendor_a.htm

Also on the same page you can find their contact phone numbers:

Hope this helps, have a great day!
