Hi.
You first need to decide if you want to make money from it:
http://www.loc.gov/teachers/copyrightmystery/text/steps/
or give it for free:
http://creativecommons.org/
(you might also decide this at the end as the work need to be completed first anyway))
Then, everything is like you want. There is no rule, you don't even have to sit down absolutely to write it :)
That said, there is one rule you better follow and this is determination: You need to make significant progress each day or at least try to make progress because ultimately the thing need to be done.
There is almost as many writing techniques as there is writers. You can use a plan, you can write as it come to you, you may do it alone, you may do it as a collective, you may write many version and mix them or you can concentrate on a single body of work.
At the end of the day, you can auto publish it or find a publisher. You may even hire an agent to find you the better publishing deal.
