Is there some kind of technology out there that someone could use to do a background check by simply taking their picture with their iphone?

SpecialistMike :

My name is XXXXX XXXXX you available?

SpecialistMike :

Are you with me?

SpecialistMike :

Hello can you read this?

Customer:

yes

SpecialistMike :

Ah ok great I was beginning to wonder if there was an issue

SpecialistMike :

So what brings your question in today?

SpecialistMike :

anything specific?

Customer:

at my job they are requiring us to send in picture before we can hire them

Customer:

its just odd

SpecialistMike :

That is a bit odd

SpecialistMike :

chances are its to familiarize everyone with the person

SpecialistMike :

so there is less of a learning process

Customer:

they are giving us BS reason

SpecialistMike :

There currently though is no Iphone technology that allows a photo to be linked directly to a background check

Customer:

your response is what they are telling us to tell the prospective employee

Customer:

it would be over 1000 employees for him to remember it is always changing to

SpecialistMike :

That type of technology is actually pretty exclusive and chances are considerably more expensive than what would be availble to the consumers

SpecialistMike :

if you think about it as a privacy issue

SpecialistMike :

because there is always a social security number(at least in the US) linked with each person

SpecialistMike :

it would ALSO be a privacy invasion if used by consumers

Customer:

maybe, just checking to see what they are really doing

SpecialistMike :

usually for the most part, third party companies are actually used for background checks otherwise

SpecialistMike :

those that specialize in it

SpecialistMike :

BUT

Customer:

it could be true but other company other than ours are starting to do this to

SpecialistMike :

again not everyone has a photo readily available so again its linked with social security

SpecialistMike :

do what require a photo?

Customer:

to get hire for a job

SpecialistMike :

It is to have your recognition on file

SpecialistMike :

for example when you see people in the news, and the photo is an employment photo

SpecialistMike :

not a mugshot

SpecialistMike :

not a candid picture

SpecialistMike :

but for identification purposes

SpecialistMike :

social security numbers are how background checks are run

SpecialistMike :

using other information

SpecialistMike :

a photo would not be reliable enough for that

Customer:

I'm thinking like you on this to

Customer:

but just checking around since we all think there is another reason for this

SpecialistMike :

Yea its just wayyyyyy to risky to depend on a photo(which could EASILY be tampered with) to risk a background check on that

Customer:

they are simply not telling us what it is

SpecialistMike :

wayyyy to risky in the digital age

SpecialistMike :

I truly believe it is for ID purposes

SpecialistMike :

think about it like this

SpecialistMike :

if someone in the company made a MAJOR mistake

SpecialistMike :

or did something truly awful

SpecialistMike :

how would you identify him/her?

SpecialistMike :

giving subjective physical features would vary person to person

Customer:

esp. since another company is starting do this this to

SpecialistMike :

what is the other company involved with?

SpecialistMike :

what kind of business

Customer:

we are thinking it is being run through some app and see if it pick up something this employee might be involve in something else, or just not be honest with us on their application

Customer:

Ours is a restaurant, the other is not a restaurant where this manager wife is working at

Customer:

I have no proof of this, we were just chatting about it tonight

SpecialistMike :

I would give you my opinion as I actually own a small business myself

SpecialistMike :

If I hired someone

SpecialistMike :

and say for example there were not a social networking person, didn't do alot online

SpecialistMike :

I would want a photo of them

SpecialistMike :

IF for some awful something went wrong at work

SpecialistMike :

and people came to question me on them or whatever else

SpecialistMike :

I would not want to say " well he/she is X feet tall, looks like this, etc..

SpecialistMike :

no matter how you look at it

SpecialistMike :

A photo is objective on what they look like

SpecialistMike :

so assuming the employer takes it

SpecialistMike :

its their file

Customer:

what kind of business do you have?

SpecialistMike :

From a background perspective

SpecialistMike :

Its in the automotive market

SpecialistMike :

focusing on preserving "special" vehicles

SpecialistMike :

very expensive ones at that

SpecialistMike :

Anyone who I have had help me before

Customer:

well, if they are wanting all their restaurants to start doing this, well there over 100 restaurants at probably 60 to 80 employees at each one

Customer:

how can they keep up with all these photos?

SpecialistMike :

OK how about this

SpecialistMike :

probably just print and file them

SpecialistMike :

what was the last restaurant you had poor service at?

SpecialistMike :

do you remember

Customer:

still seems like a lot of cost to maintain this

SpecialistMike :

From a business perspective its an operating cost

SpecialistMike :

Digital photos cost nothing to print

Customer:

I don't really recall the last time I had bad service, after working over 60 hours a week, I don't really want to go to another restaurant

SpecialistMike :

I completely understand :)

SpecialistMike :

My question following that was going to be "do you remember your waitress's/waiter's face"

Customer:

well thinks for taking to time to talk, it just seems odd to us

Customer:

not really

SpecialistMike :

does it make sense

Customer:

well, yes I do remember

SpecialistMike :

of just keeping a basic photo on file

SpecialistMike :

along with all other information

SpecialistMike :

as a way to keep people accountable and to be able to ID them easily

Customer:

but she waited on me a few times through the years

Customer:

thanks have a great night

SpecialistMike :

you too - if you have any other questions I am happy to help
