Are yoou aware of any research which addressed the issue: Why do smokers (Men vs.Women ) s t a r t to smoke?

Hello, Zev and welcome back to Just Answer.

Do you want to know about research regarding the reasons why men start to smoke and then, why women start to smoke? If the reasons are different?

Thanks,
Cher

Hi again, Zev.

I've found the following research for you, with statistics:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prevalence_of_tobacco_consumption

In the article below, it states that peer pressure is the main reason why young teens initially may start smoking (both boys and girls). Stress is typically the reason why adults start smoking and because tobacco is addictive, it's that much more difficult to quit.

The related articles and cited sources here, will also be of help:

I reviewed the links and was disappointed. Yhe only relevant anwer to my question is your the sentence "that peer pressure is the main reason why young teens initially may start smoking (both boys and girls). Stress is typically the reason why adults start smoking and because tobacco is addictive, it's that much more difficult to quit." The bold font part is n o t a reason to start.

I re-read the article mentioned in the following link:
http://health.howstuffworks.com/wellness/smoking-cessation/10-reasons-people-start-smoking11.htm
It is relevant but not comprehenive enough in my opinion to distinct between young males and females.

Hello again, Zev and thanks for your replies.

Also, your patience is appreciated, as I was offline at the time posted back.

I had sent you a request for more information, asking if you needed studies including the distinction between men and women starting smoking but you were offline at the time, so I went ahead and found the initial articles I sent you. I will continue my search for the more specific information you requested. Do you need this information within a specific timeframe?

Best regards,
Cher

Hi again, Zev.

I hope you're doing well today!

I've found the following articles for you:

http://www.livestrong.com/article/194994-why-teens-start-smoking/

http://www.livestrong.com/article/231461-why-do-teenagers-start-smoking/

This article above, refers to gender differences in why teenagers start smoking.

http://www.availclinical.com/news/why-teens-start-smoking/

http://www.fathermag.com/406/teen_smoking/

As you can see, most of these articles and research studies determined that teenagers (both boys and girls) start smoking mainly due to: XXXXX XXXXX low self-esteem, emulating parents who smoke, looking 'cool'/wanting to fit in with the 'in-crowd' who are populated with smokers, and general stresses/stressors from life, including school and home life. Advertising and wanting to emulate movie stars and/or other celebriites, were also among the main causes.

Some articles include individual percentages of boys and girls who start smoking as teenagers, but there isn't much of a difference as to the reasons why both teen boys and teen girls begin to smoke.

I hope this helped.
