Customer Question

An ancestor, James Yabsley, won a Japanese Star Order of the Rising Sun in about 1900. I have the medal and a photo of him wearing it. Is there some way I can find out why he received it? I have contacted the Japanese Embassy but they only give information on the stars and grades.
Thank you, XXXXX XXXXX

Hello, David.

That is no small decoration. Those are awarded by the Decoration Bureau of Office of the Prime Minister.

Here is the address of the main building of the cabinet office where the decoration bureau is located:

1-6-1 Nagatacho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo(NNN) NNN-NNNN
Tel. 03-5253-2111 (main switchboard)

Thanks, I'll try that address.
Is there any value in the medal?

According to this link:,Orders-and-medals,Japan---Orders-and-Medals-guide,21,296.html
200 GBP and 170 GBP was got in reality.

Like with all medal, if you can produce a nice history for it, it can greatly increase a value.

I have written to that address but have not had a reply. Any other ideas?

Perhaps it just take time. Perhaps getting the message converted to Japanese would speed things. The address did not change since then.

You could also check local newspaper archive of that year to see if there is a story about it. Other than that i sadly have no more idea.
